Your Senses are a Nanosecond Behind

The Great Way

Metamorphosis, Sage of the Ages, enlightened Hunter on living in the moment.

“You keep telling me to live in the moment,” Hunter said. “My mind is trying to learn that.”

“Your mind is a split second behind. It lives in the past,” Metamorphosis said. “Your soul exists in the eternal moment of now. To explain it in primitive terms, your senses are always a nanosecond behind.”

The sage grinned and said, “The body’s sensory organs perceive things that have already happened. For instance, it takes my voice a split second to reach your ear, vibrate your ear drum and be processed by your brain. By the time you actually interpret the sound, all sounds, a nanosecond or more has elapsed.”

Hunter frowned.

“Right now, to see me, your eyes must first allow the light rays from the fire to reflect off my face, travel to your eyes be interpreted by your optic nerves and be processed by your brain. This process also takes a nanosecond.”

“But, isn’t that the same as now?” Hunter asked. “Isn’t it close enough to be considered the present?”

“No, it is the past.”

Hunter shook his head in disbelief.

“Stars are an excellent example of how your physical senses work, how your mind interprets things. On your Earth, it takes several minutes for the light from your daystar, the sun, to travel to your planet. The daylight you see is old; it is ancient light that has arrived from the past.”

Morph took a sip of amrita.

“When you look up into your starry night, your Milky Way, the light waves from those stars have traveled hundreds of thousands of light years to reach your eyes. When you look at starlight, you see light that is two hundred thousand years old. You see the past.”

“Okay, that does make sense,” Hunter said.
